TRAUMA TREATMENT
Have you been through something recently or are experiencing symptoms from something (or many things) that have happened in the past?
I am a trauma therapist, certified in Francine Shapiro's EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitiation and Reprocessing) and trained in Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing. This means that I have gone above and beyond to get really, really good at facilitating a healing experience.
EMDR is an empirically researched form of therapy used to treat a variety of symptoms resulting from trauma. While activating (thinking about intensely) traumatic material (memories), we use bilateral stimulation (left and right, repetitive movement) to stimulate both sides of the brain. This helps the logical side of the brain and the stuck trauma part of the brain to communicate together. When a trauma happens, the material gets stuck in its original format.
Triggers are clues that there are traumatic experiences (even ones that don't have memory attached to them) that haven't been processed yet.
EMDR and Somatic Experiences desensitize traumatic experiences, allowing the material to get unstuck and "digest". Positive beliefs about yourself finally get to feel true, alllll the way in the gut.
Sick of feeling not good enough? Worthless? Powerless? Exauhsted from managing symptoms like it's a part time job? Do you want to feel confident handling situations that usually cause you to react immaturely or shut down emotionally?
EMDR and Somatic Experiencing might help! I like to start off using Somatic Experiencing because it is a gentler modality. We need to observe together how your nervous system tolerates pendulation from a more relaxed and flexible state to a more stressed and tense state. We start out with feeling into the body from a more positive place to get comfortable with connecting. I definitely want to support you in a way that is tolerable! That being said, therapy is often an uncomfortable experience at times.
EMDR is best used when there is a strong support network in place. During your first session, we will evaluate whether now is a good time to start EMDR.
